House and Home

For most homeowners, home safety and security is a major issue that needs to be dealt with upon purchase of a home, or even in the case of a rental or lease. Safety from within the home is a primary concern, even before making sure that a home is safe from burglary, vandalism, or intruders.

Your home should be a safe and secure place. Here are some easy tips you can follow to ensure that your haven provides sufficient home-safety measures for all its residents.

Proper Lighting

Install an adequate lighting system throughout the house. Adequate lighting involves both indoor and outdoor lighting. According to many home safety experts and surveys, proper lighting has effectively reduced the number of preventable accidents that happen inside the home, especially in sections where no natural light can penetrate and provide illumination. Outside the home, lighting helps provide attention to trouble spots that might conceal prowlers.

Baby Proofing Your Home

If you have toddlers or young children in the house, you can prevent unwanted incidents by making window and door locks inaccessible to them. Place plastic electric stops in the sockets to keep them from sticking their fingers or utensils in electric outlets. Install child-proof locks on your cabinet doors. If you are planning to transform your woodshed, garage, or the basement into your personal work shop, make sure that you baby-proof the area by installing locks, proper storage for your tools and chemicals (paints, sprays, and flammable solutions), and other heavy equipment.

Bathroom Safety

Wet or soapy bathroom tiles can cause slips and falls. You can reduce chances of accidental slips by installing grab bars on the bathroom walls and putting textured rugs on the floor. Also, power outlets can cause electrocution if they come in contact with water. You can greatly decrease the chance of such events by replacing your conventional outlets with those that come with ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). These types of outlets can prevent serious electrical injuries.

Kitchen Preparation

In the kitchen, make sure your children have no immediate access to knives, peelers, and other kitchen utensils. Even a seemingly harmless butter knife can cause serious injury to a three-year old.

Smoke Detectors

Investment in smoke detectors and burglar alarms is a wise move for any homeowner. You can also invest in carbon monoxide alarms that detect harmful gases.

Outside the Home

For people who live in rural areas, small animals might be a problem. If you have a persistent animal problem such as raccoons and squirrels, never set traps in your yard that can seriously injure someone, especially children. If you encounter such animals, it is best to call an animal control professional. Animal control experts can remove pets properly and safely.

Swimming Pools

Pools are a source of rest and relaxation, but they can also be dangerous areas for young people. If you happen to have a pool on your yard, never ever leave a child unsupervised. When you have a gathering or a party, make sure you have a designated pool watcher to keep an eye on the children to prevent any pool accidents.

Child Play Areas

If you plan to put a mini-playground made of plastic or metal in your yard, make sure that you put it inside the shade and away from direct sunlight. Immediate contact with plastic material or metal that has been exposed to the sunlight for a prolonged period can cause serious burns.

Plants and Yard Hazards

If you are planning to clean out the weeds and cut some branches, always watch out for poisonous plants and hives. Home safety should never be a low priority. It might take a weekend to make your home completely safe, but the hard work is worth it because it only takes a second for an accident to occur.
