General Tire Recall

In August 2002 Continental recalled 595,000 ContiTrac AW and General Grabber AW tires. These tires were primarily sold as original equipment on about 106,000 two-wheel drive Ford Expedition and Navigator SUVs. The Continental General tire recall was issued after Continental received several reports of tread separations with the recalled tires. In May 2002, six people were killed when the Continental General tire on their Ford Expedition suffered a tread separation, causing the Expedition to rollover.

Following the recall, Ford announced it had incorrectly labeled approximately 82,000 Expedition and Navigator SUVs. The rear tire pressure on these vehicles should have been 33 psi., but the label on the vehicles incorrectly stated the pressure should be 30 psi. As low tire pressure can contribute to blowouts and loss of control, the incorrect labeling on these vehicles may have contributed to the accidents that led to the General tire recall.
