As a result of increased safety awareness and recent regulations, most parents now use child safety seats. With a variety of different seats on the market, some have been discovered to be dangerous because of design problems. As these problems have surfaced, some manufacturers have issued recalls to remove the dangerous child seats from the market.
A sample listing of some child seat recalls is listed below:
Combi Car Seat Recall: Combi USA Inc, of FORT MILL, S.C. announced that they will be recalling 67,000 child-safety car seats due to frontal collision test failure. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the car seat could potentially detach from its base in the event of a frontal crash. There have been no reports of injuries or accidents tied to this recall. The recall affects Combi Centre, Centre ARB and Shuttle seats (Model Numbers. 8065, 8074, 8086, 8087 and 8520) and associated Travel Systems containing Centre and Shuttle (Model Numbers. 4400, 4515, 4520). These seats were manufactured between October 2005 and December 2007.
Combi USA Inc. will provide consumers a free retrofit kit for the seats.
Britax Car Seat Recalls: On September 9, 2006, Britax issued a recall for over 2,000 infant only child seats.Tabs on the bottom of the seats may not be seated properly and, therefore, fail to conform to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213. During an accident the carrier may rotate beyond the limits allowed in the safety standard and could result in serious injury or even death of the child.
On August 9, 2004, Britax issued a recall for nearly 350,000 car seats. The Marathon, Husky, Wizard and Snug Seat Traveler Plus were all recalled due to defects with the harness that allowed the child to move further than is safe.
Century Car Seat Recall: On October 13, 2000, Century Products issued an infant car seat recall after receiving 2,700 reports of the handles failing when the seat was used as a carrier. This defect was responsible for at least 200 injuries.
Baby Car Seat Recall: In July 2005, Combi USA issued a recall for its “Avatar Model 8100” child safety seat. The recall included all models manufactured from November 2003 through May 2004. The lower straps on the seat could detach from the “LATCH” system of the vehicle during an accident which could cause serious or even fatal injuries to children.
The above list is just a sample of car seat recalls that have been issued. For more information regarding child seat recalls and related safety information, please visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration here: NHTSA.gov
