Defective automobile tires have been a major issue in recent years. The most common occurrence is due to manufacturer’s defects causing tread separation. Tire defects have been the cause of many vehicle accidents resulting in catastrophic injury and tragic death to a vehicle’s occupants.
Defective tires have been the cause of many automobile accidents resulting in injury and death. Tire defects can exist in the design or manufacture of tires. The most common defect is tread separation which occurs primarily as a result of poor bonding or adhesion of the tread and belts to the tire carcass.
Tires older than six years also can become defective due to degradation. Infrequent use and exposure to sunlight accelerate the degradation process. Most manufacturers could be doing much more to inform consumers of tire expiration dates and warning them of the risks of using old tires.
Design and manufacturing defects abound throughout the tire industry. Common problems include: poor quality control; poor tire design; and the use of old technology and equipment. These problems all contribute to the risk of catastrophic tread separation in most of the tires on the road today. The well-known class action lawsuit against Bridgestone Firestone for ATX and Wilderness tires brought these problems to the attention of the public. Unfortunately, the tire industry has not changed much in response.
