Fuel-Fed Fires

Automotive fires that are a result of fuel system failures or flawed designs typically involve life threatening fire or heat-induced injuries sustained after an initial survivable car accident.

Vehicle fire related fatalities account for numerous deaths and serious injuries every year, and are rightly a cause for concern among consumers and the public at large. Studies by the National Fire Protection Association have shown that in the last two decades 13,580 people died and over 59,000 people were injured in vehicle fires.

Litigation involving vehicle fires resulting from fuel system failures or flawed designs have been well documented in the press over the years, and, despite time, this area of litigation continues to move forward in the face of poor design decisions. Fuel-fed fires can result from any number of design flaws or manufacturing defects, but traditionally the theories have fallen into three categories: placement of the fuel tank, siphoning failures and filler neck designs. Whatever the cause, these cases typically involve horrific facts and tales of life threatening fire or heat-induced injuries sustained after the initial survivable accident. And the bottom line to the public is that manufacturers have a duty to protect their consumers from fuel-fed fires and they should be held to that duty.
