Yasmin Menstrual Clotting

Category : Defective Drugs

Yasmin is an oral contraceptive (birth control pill) which is sometimes also prescribed for ovarian cysts, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Some doctors prescribe Yasmin for acne in women over the age of 14. Yasmin can cause many side effects; some of which are mild and others are serious. Yasmin has been known to cause menstrual clotting; excessive menstrual clotting can be a sign of serious problems.

Menstrual Clotting and Yasmin—when to worry

All women occasionally experience clotting during their menstrual flow. It is quite normal to have a blood flow which changes color during the course of your period. The blood of the menstrual flow may range from bright red to very dark brown or nearly black. Some women find they experience a dark flow to towards the end of their period; this simply means that older blood and cells are being shed from the lining of the uterus.

Small clots during the menstrual flow are nothing to worry about; however, when you routinely experience clots larger than the size of a quarter there may be something to be concerned about, particularly if your periods seem heavier than usual.

Over time heavy periods may lead anemia, because too much blood is being lost and the body cannot replace it quickly enough. The chief signs of anemia are fatigue and pale fingernail beds, but it can cause other symptoms. If you routinely experience heavy menstrual clotting, heavy periods, irregular periods, or fatigue you should consult your doctor.

Causes of Menstrual Clotting

Although the body produces anticoagulants during your menstrual flow to prevent the blood from clotting, occasionally it simply cannot produce sufficient anticoagulant to prevent any clots. This is normal and no cause to worry.

However, excess menstrual clotting can signify that something is blocking the blood flow. Fibroids—benign tumors in the uterus, can block blood flow.

Problems with the lining of the uterus can also cause menstrual blood clotting and heavy periods. Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that lines the inside of uterus begins to grow on the outside of the uterus. Adenomyosis is a condition in which the lining tissue of the uterus grows in the muscles of the uterine walls. These conditions can lead to heavy periods, anemia, and other problems. They can also cause problems for women attempting to become pregnant.

Hormone changes which accompany menopause and perimenopause can also be responsible for menstrual clotting. The menstrual cycle is regulated by the hormones estrogen and progesterone; when these are out of balance the uterus may develop a thicker lining than usual leading to menstrual clotting and excess menstrual flow.

Oral contraceptives, such as Yasmin and it generic form Ocella, interfere with the body’s normal hormone balance. This can lead to heavy menstrual flow, menstrual clotting, and irregular periods. When this occurs, it can be alarming. You may fear there is something seriously wrong. It is debatable whether menstrual clotting caused by Yasmin is actually harmful, but it can disrupt your life and make it necessary for you to have expensive medical testing to rule out serious health problems.

Medical testing for Menstrual Clotting Problems

When you go to your doctor for menstrual clotting and other menstrual problems the first tests he or she will order are blood tests. This blood work will help determine if you are anemic and if your blood is clotting properly.

The doctor may also order an MRI. This imaging scan is non-invasive and can provide an image of the uterus to determine if there are any growths, like fibroids, which may be causing or contributing to your menstrual problems.

The doctor will likely also want to do a pelvic exam. This exam is invasive and some women simply dread it, but while it can be emotionally and physically uncomfortable, it is not painful when properly done.

The doctor may also order a vaginal ultrasound. This non-painful procedure produces good images of the interior of the uterus and vagina.

Sometimes the doctor may think that a biopsy is necessary to rule out potential cancers or other problems. A special scope will be used to help the doctor retrieve a small piece of tissue from the uterine lining. The tissue will be analyzed for problems.

Occasionally, a doctor may think that a D and C (dilation and curettage) is needed. While you are under light sedation, your cervix will be dilated and the doctor will scrape off the lining of the cervix and the uterus. This allows the retrieval of tissue samples for extensive analysis and it may also be used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. If a doctor suggests a D and C, you may want to get a second opinion or seek out other options, because this procedure may not be necessary.
