Yasmin Gallbladder Disease

Category : Defective Drugs

Yasmin is an oral contraceptive containing the progesterone, drospirenone and the estrogen, ethinyl estradiol. Yasmin has been definitely linked to several dangerous medical problems, including heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. There is some indication that taking Yasmin may increase the risk of gallbladder disease. A defective drug attorney can help people who may have developed gallbladder disease from taking Yasmin understand their legal rights and help them obtain financial compensation for their suffering if the facts of their case warrant it.

Yasmin and Gallbladder Disease

The body uses bile made by the liver to help digest fats. The gallbladder which is a sac-like organ underneath the liver, stores the bile until it is needed for digestion. When the flow of bile is blocked or slowed, gallbladder disease develops. There are two types of gallbladder disease: inflammation of the gallbladder and gallstones.

Because drospirenone, a hormone contained in Yasmin has a slight diuretic effect, it is thought that it contributes to gallbladder disease. Early studies showed more evidence of this than later studies have. Scientists are still debating the role Yasmin may play in gallbladder disease, but many women who have taken Yasmin for awhile and then developed gallbladder problems believe that Yasmin may be responsible for the problem.

Yasmin should not be taken by anyone with a history of gallbladder disease.

  • Severe abdominal pain on the right side or upper middle portion of the abdomen.
  • The pain may lessen or go away completely in 12 to 18 hours.
  • Recurrent bouts of this type of pain.
  • Pain occurs after eating, especially after consuming fatty or spicy foods.
  • Pain is worse when breathing in.
  • Pain radiates to underneath the right shoulder blade or to the back.
