Yasmin Pulmonary Embolism

Category : Defective Drugs

Yasmin is an oral contraceptive that has been linked with several fatal conditions, including pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism is a large blood clot which blocks an artery in the lungs. Yasmin contains hormones which can interfere with the body’s fluid balance and lead to circulation problems—blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes. A defective drug attorney can help people who have been harmed by taking Yasmin receive financial compensation for their injuries.

The Cause of Yasmin-related Pulmonary Embolism

The primary cause of Yasmin-related pulmonary embolism is a condition called hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia refers to a build up of too much potassium in the blood. Our bodies need potassium to help stimulate muscle contractions and perform a variety of other important functions, but excess potassium in the blood can lead to abnormal heart rhythms. Abnormal heart rhythms interfere with the circulation of the blood, which in turn can cause the formation of clots in any part of the body.

Usually a clot in the lungs has traveled from another part of the body, generally from the leg (deep vein thrombosis). The term embolus is used for a clot that has traveled from one part of the body to another part; so a clot in the lungs is called a pulmonary (relating to the lungs) embolism. Pulmonary embolisms can cause permanent damage to the affected part of the lungs and damage to other organs in the body, because when the lungs are impaired the rest of the body does not receive enough oxygen. A pulmonary embolism can be fatal.

Signs of Pulmonary Embolism

People with a pulmonary embolism may not experience any symptoms until the condition has caused damage. Sometimes pulmonary embolism gives the following warning signs

  • Unexplained shortness of breath.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Chest pain.
  • Coughing or coughing up blood.
  • Irregular heart beat.
  • Anxiety or dread.
  • Lighted head feeling or fainting.
  • Sweating profusely.
  • Increased breathing.
  • Increased heart rate.

Sometimes the signs of deep vein thrombosis are the only signs that appear in a case of pulmonary embolism. Signs of deep vein thrombosis include:

  • Leg swelling or swelling along the vein in the leg.
  • Tenderness or pain in the leg.
  • Sensation of increased warmth in the leg.
  • Redness, inflammation, or discoloration of the skin of the leg.

These symptoms are signs of a medical emergency. Seek medical treatment immediately if you have any of the above symptoms of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis.
