On June 16, 2009 the FDA issued a warning to consumers to quit using three Zicam cold relief remedies. The remedies have been associated with a loss of the sense of smell, a condition known as anosmia. Over 130 people have reported losing their sense of smell after using these Zicam products.
The Products
The loss of the sense of smell has been associated Zicam Cold Remedy Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (a product which has already been discontinued)
The Effects of Zicam
Some users have reported that they lost their sense of smell after using one the Zicam products in question only one time. Other users have reported losing their sense of smell after using the products several times. Loss of the sense of smell can be temporary or it can be permanent
Losing the sense of smell greatly affects quality of life. The sense of taste depends to a great extent on the sense of smell; when you cannot smell something, it seems less appetizing. This is especially a problem for older people, who frequently already have a diminished appetite and have difficult consuming adequate nutrients.
Loss of the sense of smell can also be dangerous. Smell is one of the ways we detect danger. A person with no sense of smell cannot smell the smoke of a fire or the odor of a gas leak or other toxic fumes.
