General Motors is recalling 98,707 Chevrolet Cobalts manufactured from 2005 through 2006. The Cobalts do not meet the minimum requirement for head impact protection for vehicles not equipped with side impact air bags. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 201, “Occupant Protection in Interior Impact”, requires that vehicles without side impact air bags meet a certain level of head protection. During testing, the Cobalt failed to meet this standard. Dealers will install energy absorbing headliner trim to help reduce the severity of head impacts with the interior of the vehicle during an accident.
