On May 29, 2007, the Rubber Manufacturers Association of America issued a bulletin stating that “used passenger and light truck tires that have an uncertain or unknown history pose a potential risk”. Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire also recently
told its 2,200 retail stores to stop selling used tires. There is no way of knowing the history of a used tire, where or how it was stored, whether or not it has ever been punctured or installed on a damaged rim. Any of these conditions could result in a tire that is unsafe and not fit for continued use on a passenger vehicle. The safest bet is to avoid used tires completely, if possible.
