The Arctic Cat Prowler has been on the market for a few years. The manufacturer calls this vehicle a multi-rider All Terrain Vehicle. It has also been called a Recreational Utility Vehicle (RUV). The Prowler comes in three different engine sizes: the 550, the 700 and the 1000.
About the Arctic Cat Prowler
The Prowler 550 features a 545 cc liquid-cooled engine. The Prowler 700 has a 695 cc liquid cooled EFI engine. The Arctic Cat Prowler1000 features a V-twin 951cc fuel injected engine. All three vehicles have a 1500 pound towing capacity.
Problems with the Arctic Cat Prowler
In May 2009, Arctic Cat voluntarily recalled around 2,100 of the 2006 Prowler XT models because of a problem with the brakes. Some of these vehicles were leaking brake fluid and this can lead to reduced braking ability. No accidents were reported because of the problem. The problem effected Prowlers with VIN numbers ranging from 4UF06MPVO6T300001 through 4UF06MPV16T302369.
Safety of the Arctic Cat Prowler
All terrain and recreational utility vehicles are prone to rollovers and tip-overs because of their design. The Arctic Cat Prowler does not seem to have had extra problems in this area; however, it does not have some of the built-in safety features that Polaris and other manufacturers feature. For example, some earlier models of the Arctic Cat Prowler came from the factory with only lap belts. Some of the Arctic Cat’s competitors have three point safety belts and extra features to protect occupants in case of a rollover.
Obviously a lap belt is not sufficient protection in an open vehicle such as an Arctic Cat Prowler. The most dangerous and common accidents with RUVs are rollover accidents; the occupants often get crushed by the vehicle or ejected from it. A lap belt cannot provide the proper protection to hold the rider safely within the vehicle. Because head injuries are a common problem in RUV accidents, all occupants should be properly strapped in and should wear an approved safety helmet.

Preventative Maintenance for RUVs
Preventative maintenance can prevent some problems with RUVs and ATVS. Here is a short list of tips to keep your vehicles running smoothly:
· Visually inspect the axles and other suspension parts of the RUV regularly. After every ride is ideal.
· Maintain proper tire pressure in all four tires. Unbalanced tire pressure can cause accidents.
· Routinely clean the air filter. This helps to prevent stalling.
· Check the oil regularly.
