Gadolinium concerns increasing as awareness of NSF disease spreads

For the past month, awareness has been spreading for a serious health condition called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, which occurs in people with kidney disease. The source of NSF may be gadolinium imaging dye that is commonly used in MRI testing. Gadolinium is a rare element that has exceptional physical composition qualities that make it perfect for shielding in radiography, specifically MRI techniques. However, the element is causing a variety of side effects in patients with kidney disease.

The parental consumer advocate group America’s Watchdog and, more specifically, the U.S. Drug Watchdog group are warning people with kidney disease that their condition is susceptible to a variety of side effects after receiving a MRI. Some patients have reported issues with sections of their skin turning orange or becoming rough to the touch. Other patients have reported experiences with difficulty in mobility. Watchdog insists that NSF is a vastly underreported disease with serious health consequences for people who are inflicted.

NSF alters the color and texture of the skin, mostly with mild symptoms at first, followed by a gradual increase in severity. Constant and common symptoms of NSF are burning, itching, and sharp, centralized pains. In more serious cases of NSF, patients can experience severely intense pains in their bones, as well as damage to their eyes and internal organs. People suffering from NSF typically suffer from other diseases, including kidney disease and hepatitis C. Most patients will regularly use immunosuppressive medications in treatment, as well as hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. While seven gadolinium contrast agents have been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, four in particular – Omniscan, Multihance, Magnevist, and OptiMARK – have been acknowledged for the role they play in causing NSF.

It is believed that more than 26 million people in the U.S. suffer from kidney disease, and thousands could be suffering from NSF and not know it. People experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms of NSF should contact their physician or other medical professional immediately.
