For the past two weeks, the Japanese subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline has been launching and conducting a recall of particular Poligrip products due to the use of zinc as an ingredient. At least three consumers have reported experiencing health complications as the result of side effects of the zinc in Poligrip EX. Excessive zinc consumption can lead to problems with the immune system, as well as neurological illness.
While the Japanese representation of GSK is viewing this problem as serious enough to pull the popular denture cream from stores, the American subsidiary has opted instead to simply let stores sell out of the current products and then replacing them with new zinc-free versions of the creams. American consumers have been filing complaints and reporting illnesses for months, however representatives of GSK maintain that the products are still safe enough, so long as they’re not used on overabundance.
Last month, GSK announced that the Poligrip adhesive creams would be manufactured without zinc from there on, and the company informed physicians and related medical professionals that the excessive use of three of the most popular Super Poligrip brands could lead to serious health complications. The brands involved are Original, Ultra Fresh, and Extra Care.
Common side effects of the excessive use of zinc include fever, nausea, stomach pains, throat pains, coughing, and fatigue. Excessive zinc intake over a long period of time can also lead to prostate cancer in males.
