Any good chef will tell you that the point of purchasing high-end cookware is knowing that you likely won’t have to replace your pots and pans anytime in the near future. More to the point, if a customer spends $3,500 on an entire set of pots and pans, he will want to feel confident that they will withstand high temperatures and not melt on a stovetop and cause severe burns or even fires. Unfortunately, owners of the Royal Prestige 9-Ply Thermal Wall Cookware sets have been finding out the hard way that price isn’t always an indicator of high quality.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Wisconsin-based Hy Cite Enterprises have announced today that the latter is recalling approximately 1.7 million sets of the Royal Prestige cookware because of a manufacturing defect that causes the pots and pans to “collapse, crimp or severely deform,” according to the CPSC. Basically, while people have been cooking with the Royal Prestige cookware – which includes 9 pieces, ranging from saucepans to large skillets – the metal items have been warping and melting, creating a hazard that dangerous spillage may splash scorching liquids and food items at and around them.
As of today’s major recall announcement, the CPSC and Hy Cite are aware of as many as 1,136 reports of these pots and pans collapsing or warping, and one consumer has reported being splashed and burned by hot oil. The Italian-made cookware is sold by independent Hy Cite distributors through door-to-door sales, with individual items costing between $250 and $800 and sets costing between $800 and $3,500. The complete set includes a 1.5 qt. saucepan, 2 qt. saucepan, 3 qt. Dutch oven, 4 qt. Dutch oven, 6 qt. Dutch oven, 8 qt. Dutch oven, 8″ skillet, 10.5″ skillet, 10″ paella pan and 14″ paella pan. However, each individual piece is susceptible to the aforementioned defect and hazards.
The CPSC is urging consumers who may have purchased these cookware sets or individual pieces to cease using them immediately. Consumers can contact Hy Cite at (800) 609-9577 for information on how to have the cookware fixed or damaged items replaced.
