Porsche Recalling 2,263 ‘Car Of The Year’ Carrera Models For Exhaust Defect

Porsche Recalling 2,263 ‘Car Of The Year’ Carrera Models For Exhaust Defect

At $108,000, the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera is out of most American consumers’ price range, and the 2012 model isn’t much better with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of approximately $103,000. But those prices are expected because the Porsche brand has long been synonymous with luxury and high quality, as much that the high profile Robb Report has already named the 2013 Carrera S the Car of the Year, citing its incredibly significant value for such a “common” sports car price. For $108,000, though, consumers should expect the highest of quality from any automobile, and not, for example, a tailpipe that could fall off while the vehicle is being operated.

Unfortunately, the 2012 and 2013 Porsche Carrera and Carrera S models are dealing with just that, according to a recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As many as 2,263 Porsche vehicles are being recalled because of a manufacturing defect within the engine cooling and exhaust systems. The defect can cause the exhaust tailpipe to break and completely separate from the vehicle, and if the Carrera is being operated at the time, the debris could cause considerable danger for other drivers on the road.

While Porsche officials claim that they have not received any reports of accidents or injuries, they did admit that vehicles with higher mileage totals (approximately 25,000 miles or higher) were likely more susceptible to problems, according to the USA Today.

"Porsche is not aware of any defects or reported failures on any customer-owned vehicles. All defects determined to date were reported on internal Porsche test vehicles with higher mileages,” company officials claimed in a statement.

Regardless, Porsche is moving ahead with the recall of these vehicles, which were manufactured between March 7, 2012 and November 12, 2012. Consumers can contact Porsche at (800) 767-7243 to determine if their vehicles are included in this recall; however, Porsche has not yet declared a start date or notification schedule.
