Powell Company Recalls Over 6,000 Bean Bag Chairs Due To Suffocation And Strangulation Hazard

Common products that are made for infants and children may not always be designed or manufactured properly to ensure safety.  This past February, Musty USA recalled approximately 340 of the popular EVO strollers after inspections revealed they may pose a strangulation hazard.  Young children could potentially slip through the front bar, and the child’s neck could get caught in the gap.

Last week, the CPSC announced the recall of another product that could put children’s safety in jeopardy.  Powell Company is recalling approximately 6,300 Anywhere Lounger Bean Bag Chairs that were sold at furniture stores such as W.S. Badcock, Value City Furniture and online at Groupon.com from June 2012 to February 2013 for approximately $100.  Consumers who bought the chair should immediately inspect their product to see if it’s affected by the recall.

According to the CPSC, the Anywhere Lounger Bean Bag Chairs may not have a permanent zipper closure, which can “allow young children to unzip, ingest or inhale the small beads inside of the bean bag chair, posing a suffocation and strangulation hazard.”  Owners should immediately take the chair away from children and stop use until they identify whether or not the recall affects their bean bag chair.

Recalled chairs, which were manufactured in China and have a Powell Company label, are 100 percent polyester or cotton and are approximately 51 inches tall and have a 43 inch wide base.  Consumers can check the item number printed on the product packaging to help determine if they might have a faulty bean bag chair.  The following colors and product numbers are affected by the recall:

Purple (item 199-B004)

Chocolate (item 199-B005)

Bayou Blue (item 199-B006)

Pink (item 199-B007)

Lime Green (item 199-B008)

Denim (item 199-B009)

Black and White (item 199-B012)

Striped Black and White (item 199-B014)

Natural (item 199-B016)

Camo (item 199-B017)

If the bean bag chair zipper can be opened, consumers should put the product out of children’s reach and contact Powell Company for a free repair kit and instructions.  Individuals who have questions or concerns may contact the company at (800) 622-4456 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  More information on the recall can also be found at www.powellcompany.com by clicking on the “Anywhere Lounger Safety Enhancement Kit” link located on the home page.
