Holgate Toys Recalls About 5,000 Playmat Sets Due to Choking Hazard

The children’s toy manufacturer Toysmith had to recall approximately 30,000 light-up frog and duck toys last week because the toys had pieces that could detach and pose a choking hazard for young children. Choking hazards are common in toys, especially since toy manufacturers tend to produce small products. This week, another toy manufacturer is recalling a product for similar reasons. Specifically, Holgate Toys is recalling approximately 5,000 playmat sets because of parts that may detach and pose a choking hazard to young children.

According to the CPSC, the playmat set includes small wooden vehicles with wheels that could detach and become potentially dangerous for young children. A child could choke on the pieces if the pieces are accidentally ingested. Holgate Toys is aware of one incident in which the wheels have detached from a vehicle, but no injuries have been reported.

The playmat set, which was manufactured in the United States, consists of a large, cotton playmat with a road printed on it and four wooden vehicles. The toy vehicles are blue, red, green and yellow. Packaged in a yellow box with the words “Made in the USA” printed on the front, the playmat sets also feature a “2+” age label. The back of the box has the UPC code 0 7789028735 4 printed on it.

The playmat sets were sold at Wegmans Food Stores, a supermarket chain with 81 stores in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, for about $25 from October 2012 through June 2013. The CPSC recommends that consumers take the wooden vehicles away from young children and return them to Wegmans for a full refund. Holgate Toys may also be contacted for instructions on how to return the vehicles to the company.

Consumers can contact Holgate Toys by phone at 855-344-7488 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. Consumers can also find more information at http://www.holgatetoy.com/Wegmans-Recall-Safety-Notice_ep_50.html.
