People who live in moist and hot areas often need to keep their homes at a stable humidity to prevent the spread of mold and other conditions. This is where a dehumidifier comes in. However, this year millions of dehumidifiers have been recalled due to overheating issues. In July, Sears reissued a recall for approximately 795,000 Kenmore dehumidifiers due to several fire and burn incidents. This month, one of the largest recalls of this year has just been issued for nearly 2.2 million dehumidifiers. The Chinese manufacturer Gree is recalling about 12 brands of the dehumidifiers due to reports of more than $2 million in property damage.

According to the CPSC, “the dehumidifiers can overheat, smoke and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.” To date, there have been 165 incident reports, including 46 fires and approximately $2.15 million in property damage, according to ABC News. Although there’s been a great amount of property damage reported, Gree has not received any reports of injuries.

The recall affects brand names Danby, De’Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima, which come in various pint sizes. The dehumidifiers are plastic and come in the colors white, beige, gray or black. The front of the dehumidifiers has the brand name and the pint capacity. Additionally, a sticker with the dehumidifiers’ model number and date code can be found on the back, side or front of the product. The model numbers, capacity and date code range of the recalled dehumidifiers are listed on the CPSC’s website.

The recalled dehumidifiers were sold at “AAFES, HH Gregg, Home Depot, Kmart, Lowe’s, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Sam’s Club, Sears and other stores nationwide and in Canada, and online at Amazon.com and Ebay.com,” according to the CPSC. The dehumidifiers were sold for between $110 and $400 from January 2005 through August 2013. Consumers who own recalled dehumidifiers are instructed to turn off and unplug them. Then, consumers can contact Gree at 866-853-2802 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Saturday for information regarding a refund.
