Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella Lead To Heightened Stroke Risk, Plaintiffs Claim

Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella Lead To Heightened Stroke Risk, Plaintiffs Claim

When you read about huge class action lawsuits or multidistrict litigation in the news, it can be easy to forget about the individuals who have suffered personal tragedies and losses. Once the individual cases get lumped together with thousands of others, the information can be simplified. What was experienced directly by individual women in the Yaz lawsuits translates into a cold, impersonal list of symptoms. Remember, however, that each of the 4,000 plaintiffs went through their own challenges while using Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella.

KOCO News of Oklahoma City recently reported on the case of Susan Gallenos. Only one month into starting her Yaz prescription, Gallenos had a stroke. She had to have part of her skull surgically removed to help reduce swelling in her brain. The article reports that her IQ dropped to 77 and that when she returned home to her children, they experienced her as a different woman.

Gallenos is not the only woman who suffered a stroke while taking Bayer’s birth control pills. Brenda Hamilton of New Jersey had been taking Yasmin for about two years when she endured a serious stroke. She was 27 at the time. A Fox News article quoted Hamilton saying, “I’m pretty angry that this happened to me. I was 27 at the time. I don’t think this should be happening to young women. It shouldn’t happen to any woman just because they take birth-control pills.”

One of the main points that is common among many of the plaintiffs’ claims against Bayer is that the company knew of the statistically higher risks of the active ingredients in Yaz and Yasmin, but did not inform doctors and patients of those facts. None of the 4,000 women who have filed suit knew that there were other, less risky choices available to them at the time they were prescribed the controversial birth control pills.

Lawsuits Allege Death As Side Effect Of Yaz, Yasmin

We may never be 100 percent certain just how many women have died from conditions related to the effects of Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella. While it may prove impossible to gauge a precise figure, at least 50 out of 4,000 plaintiffs are families that have suffered the loss of their mother, sister, or daughter after having been prescribed one of Bayer’s popular birth control pills.

Seemingly scarce news coverage has emerged about the personal struggles endured by thousands of women who were prescribed Yaz since its approval by the FDA in 2006. One might expect such a large number of lawsuits to generate hundreds of articles and interviews, and a lot more attention on the company who makes the pills. However, Bayer continues to market and produce its controversial prescription contraception with approval from the FDA.

Do Profit-Driven Motives Overshadow Patient Safety In Yaz, Yasmin Cases?

Birth control pill prices continue to rise while Bayer sets aside money in preparation to defend against thousands of claims that the company failed to adequately warn young women of the potentially heightened risks involved with taking Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella. Bayer continues to release new products containing the same ingredients as Yaz without seriously considering the health and safety of the individuals affected by their products. Some articles have claimed that as many as 50 women have died as a result of the adverse side effects of Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella.

Yaz, Yasmin, and Gallbladder Disease

As the 4,200+ cases against Bayer over the serious side effects and alleged injuries and deaths caused by Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella proceed, it remains unclear exactly how the drug might be responsible for gallbladder damage. There is a correlation between increased gallbladder issues and the use of the drugs, but doctors and lawyers have yet to demonstrate exactly how the problem arises.

Yaz Has Long Alleged Track Record Of Blood Clots, Death

While the more than 4,000 Yaz lawsuits proceed slowly, looking back to reports on one of Bayer’s most popular and profitable pill might shed some light on the reasons behind the mounting lawsuits. In July of 2009, CBS Business Network reported that Yaz caused an alleged 50 deaths between 2004 and 2008, according to claims made by plaintiffs. More and more lawsuits continue to be added to the already long list.
