Expanded Honda Recall

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has expanded its initial January 31, 2012 air bag recall of certain Honda and Acura models from 347 vehicles to 974.  In their letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Honda explains this recall now includes some Honda Civic and Acura MDX models as well.

Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced two separate recalls over side curtain air bags that may fail to deploy in the event of a crash.  Honda recalled 347 of its 2012 Accord and Crosstour hatchback models, while Toyota recalled 427 of its 2011 Rav4 vehicles.

Federal safety regulators have upgraded a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) probe into 386,873 Jeep Liberty SUVs.  So far, 50 people have come forward claiming they were injured when their vehicle’s air bags deployed without any collision involvement, Reuters reports.

Earlier last month, Kia Motors America, Inc. initiated a recall of over 145,000 of its vehicles because the driver’s frontal air bag may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash.  The New York Times explains that this recall “covers the 2006-8 Optima sedan and the 2007-8 Rondo wagon.”

The Wall Street Journal reports that "Chrysler Group LLC said it is recalling 5,334 Jeep Wrangler vehicles from the 2008 through 2012 model years to fix a problem that could cause malfunctions in their airbag systems." According to the report, this issue is limited to a small group of Wranglers which were sold in the United States with their steering wheels positioned on the right side of the vehicle. The news source explains that most of these vehicles are used for rural postal delivery.

A recent Autoweek recall article announced that Hyundai has recalled  “205,233 copies of the 2007-2008 Santa Fe and Veracruz because of an issue with the airbags.” According to the auto news source, “Hyundai has received about 7,800 warranty claims as a result of airbag defects in these vehicles, though the carmaker said it is not aware of any related accidents or injuries.”

Nissan recalled more than 200,000 of its vehicles in February 2008 due to problems with an electrical component that could potentially cause the airbags to be ineffective during a crash incident. Vehicles covered under the recall included the 2007-2008 year models of its Infiniti EX35, G35 and G37 as well as the Nissan 350Z, Altima, Murano and Rogue.

To date, no injuries have been reported but owners of the affected models were urged at th time to bring their vehicles to Nissan or the appointed dealers for the problem to be fixed.
