Another infant product has been recalled this week as the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Fisher-Price received 600 reports of mold in their popular Rock ‘N Play Sleeper.  According to the announcement, Fisher-Price is issuing a voluntary recall of approximately 800,000 units that were sold at stores nationwide and online since September 2009.

Mold can reportedly develop between the removable cushion and the hard plastic frame if the product remains wet or is infrequently cleaned.  The infant could be exposed to the fungus, which can potentially cause the child to develop respiratory illnesses and other infections.  According to the warning, 16 infants have been treated for respiratory issues, coughing and hives after they were in the sleepers.

The Rock ‘N Play, which is designed for babies up to 25 pounds and features a tubular metal rocking frame, is still sold at mass merchandise stores nationwide.   The product’s removable fabric cover is sold in 14 patterns and color palettes, and units that are in retail stores are not affected by the recall.  Although mold is not present at the time of purchase, it can grow after regular use of the product.

Parents who have the infant sleeper are urged to immediately check for dark brown, gray or black spots under the removable seat cushion which can indicate the growth of fungus.  If mold is present, consumers should immediately stop use of the product and contact Fisher-Price for instructions or further assistance.

In order to avoid the development of mold, consumers who regularly use the product should periodically remove the pad from the liner to air-out and prevent moisture buildup.Fisher-Price also recommends washing the pad with mild detergent once a week or each time the product becomes soiled.  If mold is present, the company recommends washing the pad with bleach and air-drying the product completely before replacing the pad on the liner.
