What Toyota Models Are Being Recalled

Several Toyota, Lexus, and Scion models have defective Takata airbags and are subject to a recall.

There may be additional recalls coming. In fact, Toyota recalled an additional 601,300 vehicles in a January 2018 announcement. You can check if your vehicle is part of the recall by heading to our Takata airbag recall page and using the lookup tool on the page.

Why Are Vehicles With Takata Airbags Being Recalled?

Millions of vehicles nationwide are under recall because Takata used ammonium nitrate as a propellant in its inflators. Ammonium nitrate can degrade over time, especially in areas of high heat and humidity. When the airbag’s crash sensor ignites the degraded propellant, it can cause an explosion that shatters the inflator mechanism and sends shards of metal throughout the vehicle.

See our page on what caused the Takata airbags to be defective for more information.

What Should I Do If My Toyota Vehicle Is on the Takata Recall List?

The first thing you need to do is contact your local Toyota, Lexus, or Scion dealership. Only an authorized dealership or service center will be able to replace the defective airbag. The repair is free but call ahead of time to make an appointment, as the demand is high given the massive size of the recall.

In addition to replacing your airbag, Toyota reached a settlement agreement in a class action suit that could allow you to claim compensation. This could include money for a rental car, out-of-pocket expenses, and other related costs.
