As a part of the massive Takata airbag recall, Mercedes-Benz recalled 700,000 defective airbags installed in its vehicles between 2005 and 2017. These airbags can lead to serious injuries and even death during relatively minor accidents.

There are an estimated 37 million cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, and motorcycles currently covered by the Takata recall as of March 2018. Accounting for about 50 million airbags, this is the largest automotive recall in United States history. The NHTSA expects to expand this recall to between 65 and 70 million airbags before it is over in December 2019.
The Issue with Takata Airbags
The defect in these airbags stems from the chemical compound used to inflate the airbag. Takata used an ammonium nitrate compound without a drying agent. Long-term exposure to heat and humidity can cause this unstable compound to degrade.
When ignited during deployment, it can cause the metal inflator to shatter, sending shrapnel flying throughout the vehicle. First responders to some of these accidents have reported seeing injuries similar to those sustained in a shooting or stabbing to the face or neck.

Mercedes-Benz Recall Completion Rates
Mercedes-Benz still has a large percentage of vehicles affected by the Takata airbag recalls on the road, with no repairs made. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mercedes service centers have completed about 18,200 repairs on defective Takata airbags as of March 2018. These replacements account for less than three percent of the total 706,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles recalled. This is the lowest repair rate of the 19 involved automakers.
This extremely low replacement completion rate tells us that many vehicles with defective airbags remain on the roads, and the occupants of these vehicles remain at risk of serious, catastrophic injuries or even death if their airbag inflator ruptures during an accident.
