Every month, the NHTSA announces several vehicle recalls, most of them sedans, trucks, and sport utility vehicles. Many times these recalls are small and only affect a few hundred vehicles. Other recalls, like a Chrysler recall that occurred last month, are large and affect anywhere from hundreds of thousands to more than a million vehicles. While passenger vehicle recalls are common, motorcycle recalls aren’t as common.

Currently, Harley-Davidson is in the process of recalling approximately 19,597 motorcycles due to potential issues with the motorcycles’ clutches. A similar recall was announced in October, in which 25,185 Touring motorcycles were recalled due to the clutch potentially not disengaging as intended in some models, according to Consumer Affairs.

Consumer Affairs reports that the current recall affects certain model year FLHTCU, FLHTK, FLHTP, FLHX, FLHXS, FLHTKSE, and FLHRSE motorcycles. In October, the NHTSA reported that two possible conditions may prevent the clutch from disengaging: air entering the clutch system by means of the clutch master cylinder, or an improper clutch release plate. The risk of a crash and injuries could be increased if the clutch does not disengage. If the clutch of the affected models does not disengage, then the rider of the motorcycle could have difficulty slowing down or stopping the motorcycle.

The affected motorcycles were manufactured between May 3, 2013 and October 14, 2013. Owners of the affected motorcycles have already been notified by Harley-Davidson. Harley-Davidson dealers will “rebuild the clutch master cylinder and install the proper clutch release plate, as necessary, free of charge,” according to documents with the NHTSA.

Consumers who have more questions about the Harley-Davidson recall are instructed to contact the motorcycle manufacturer at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s recall number for this current recall action is 0153.
