Chairs Can Allegedly Turn into a Shocking Hazard; La-Z-Boy Recalls 2,700

Electronic chairs designed to help people rise to their feet can reportedly induce an electric shock while the power supply is in operation. Authorities have identified an enclosure that can crack, exposing a seated individual to the chairs main power source. Those power supplies are now being recalled by La-Z-Boy. Around 2,500 pieces of the possibly defective equipment were made in China and imported by LogicData North America before they were sold by La-Z-Boy across the United States (around 200 more were sold in Canada). No injuries have been reported at the time of the recall.

Four models of La-Z-Boy loungers are affected; the Clayton Luxury-Lift (model 1HL562), the Clayton Power Lift (model 1ML562), & Luxury-Lift (models 1LF505 and 1LF819). All of the chairs were sold from September 2015 to November 2016 at nationwide furniture retailers and online for between $1,900 and $2,800. La-Z-Boy has told officials that the recall is limited to power supplies from LOT #150113, which is printed on the back side. The power supplies were sold for around $170 or were provided as a replacement by La-Z-Boy to customers who needed a new one. No original power supplies are being recalled at this time.

2015 La-Z-Boy Tip Overs and Fire Hazards

In May of 2015 La-Z-Boy announced the recall of 2,600 pieces of their furniture over alleged incidents of recliners and loveseats tipping forward. Though potentially dangerous, the seats, sold from January 2015 to March 2015, did not lead to any reported injuries. Earlier that year, in January 2015, La-Z-Boy also recalled around 4,000 of their “control wands” over worries that they could overheat and pose a fire or burn hazard. La-Z-Boy told authorities that the wands, distributed with chairs sold in 2014, were found to overheat in at least three floor models. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has instructed owners of a recently recalled La-Z-Boy power supply to disconnect it immediately. La-Z-Boy has informed their customers that a replacement will be provided at no charge.
