What If My Airbag Is on the Recall List But Does Not Have an Open Recall?

The NHTSA and automakers are conducting the recall in stages. Each vehicle is part of a Priority Group. If your vehicle is part of a Priority Group that is not yet under recall, then your vehicle will not yet have an open recall.

Unfortunately, you must wait until your vehicle has an open recall to get a free repair at a dealership.

Your vehicle’s Priority Group depends on the vehicle’s make, model, and year, as well as the state in which it is registered. Vehicles registered in warm and humid climates get priority over vehicles registered in other areas of the country.

The problem with Takata airbags stems from the use of ammonium nitrate without including a drying agent. Ammonium nitrate may degrade when exposed to moisture, such as in humid climates. The inflator may explode, shattering the mechanism and shooting metal shrapnel into the vehicle.

You can learn more about Priority Groups on our Takata recall page.

What Should I Do If My Airbag Is Under Recall?

Call your local dealership to schedule an appointment to get the airbag repaired. The dealership must repair the airbag for free. This recall is massive, so call ahead to make an appointment.
