On December 1, 2016, Toyota announced a vehicle recall because of improperly deploying side curtain shield airbags. This post details what you need to know about Toyota’s curtain shield airbag recall.

Details of the Recall

What Vehicles Are Covered?

The recall covers 320,000 of the following Toyota makes and models:

  • 2003-2006 Land Cruiser
  • 2004-2006 4Runner
  • 2005-2006 Tundra
  • 2005-2006 Sequoia

The recall also covers the 2003-2006 Lexus LX470 and the 2004-2006 Lexus GX470.

There is an active Toyota recall for curtain shield airbags that may deploy inadvertently.

What Is the Issue with the Airbags?

The vehicles above contain side curtain shield airbags that deploy from the roof. The airbag manufacturer improperly programmed the airbag control module, leaving the potential for the airbags to inadvertently deploy “shortly after startup.” This could cause the driver of the vehicle to crash their car, leading to serious injuries or even death. The seatbelt pretensioners may also malfunction.

Note: This recall is not related to the Takata airbag recall.

Have There Been Injuries or Deaths?

As of March 2018, Toyota has not reported any crashes caused by the defect. At the time of the recall, company spokesperson Cindy Knight told Edmunds.com, Toyota had “received reports alleging injuries, such as abrasions and ringing in the ears.” Note: If you have not received a letter but own a vehicle you think might be affected, you can check your Vehicle Information Number (VIN) on SaferCar.gov. (To find your VIN, stand outside your car and look at the bottom right corner of your windshield.) Affected owners can call Toyota customer service at 1-888-271-9371 and reference recall numbers G0C and GLB. Lexus owners can call 1-800-255-9371.

Can Owners File A Suit?

Is There a Limit for How Long I Have to File a Suit?
