Volvo Announces Truck Recall for Brake Defect

Volvo Announces Truck Recall for Brake Defect

Volvo Trucks North America has recently announced the recall of certain model year 2011 and 2012 VNL and VNM vehicles for a relay valve defect that could affect the vehicle’s brakes, leading to a loss of control and possible crash.

According to the NHTSA, vehicles equipped with the Bendix ATR-6 traction relay valves “may potentially develop internal leakage” in very cold conditions.  This internal leakage could then deliver air pressure to “affected primary or secondary” brake components, leading to continuous brake application.

This continuous brake pressure can eventually lead to overheating and even fire.  Furthermore, this constant brake application can cause the wheels to lock up during driving, leading to a potential loss of control and crash.

The NHTSA explains that this recall affects 22,383 vehicles.  Volvo said that a temporary repair will be made for customers until a permanent fix is developed.  The automaker is expected to begin notifying customers sometime this month.
