Wal-Mart Recalls More than 70,000 Card Table Sets Due to Amputation & Fall Hazards

Wal-Mart Recalls More than 70,000 Card Table Sets Due to Amputation & Fall Hazards

Target and Wal-Mart are two of the largest retailers in the United States. Both retailers have had their fair share of controversy as well. For instance, Target had a security breach involving customer credit card information during the holidays, and Wal-Mart recently came under fire for allegedly selling fox meat instead of donkey meat in China. Both Target and Wal-Mart have also had a few products recalled in their stores. In September, Target recalled approximately 25,000 lamps due to fire and shock hazards.

This month, Wal-Mart is now recalling approximately 73,400 card table sets due to the risk of amputation and falling. According to the CPSC, “the chairs can collapse unexpectedly, posing a fall hazard and a risk of finger injury, including finger amputation.” To date, Wal-Mart has received 10 reports of the chairs collapsing and resulting in injuries. The injuries include “one finger amputation, three fingertip amputations, sprained or fractured fingers and one report of a sore back.

The recall involves five-piece card table sets from Mainstays, one of Wal-Mart’s home and kitchen brands. The sets include four folding chairs and a folding table, all made of black metal and padded material. A white label with the words “Made by: Dongguan Shin Din Metal & Plastic Products Co.” can be found on the bottom of the chairs. The recalled card table sets were sold at Wal-Mart for approximately $50 from May 2013 through November 2013, according to the Associated Press.

Wal-Mart will completely refund consumers who own the recalled card table sets. In the meantime, the company urges consumers to immediately stop using the sets. Consumers can contact Wal-Mart at 1-800-925-6278 for more information about the recall. Wal-Mart’s website also has information about the recall.
