General Motors recalled about 1,500 of its 2007 Chevrolet Aveo sedan cars in the United Arab Emirates due to a defect in the fuel line that could potentially cause the vehicle to go in flames in the event of a crash.

The recall decision was confirmed by the local agent of General Motors Company in the UAE, GM Overseas Distribution Corp and the announcement was made by UAE’s Director of the Ministry of Economy’s Consumer Protection Unit, Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi.

A result from crash tests conducted by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that the fuel line in the engine compartment developed a fracture after a crash and caused short circuits in the fuse block. As a result, the fuel pump continued to leak oil onto the ground. The leak could potentially cause the car to go into flames during a crash or head-on collision.

To date, GM has sent notices to all owners of the affected models with the exception of 15 of them whom GM could not contact, and have completed repairs for 60 percent of cars brought in by owners. During the repair, GM will replace the faulty fuel line with a new redesigned fuel line and a fuse block. All repair costs will be borne by GM and duration of the repair will take approximately one hour.

Owners of the affected models should contact Fatima Abbas at 04-339-3636 for an appointment. GM’s service center is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
