IKEA Recalls 33,400 Beach Chairs After Six Fingertips Are Severed

A tranquil day at the beach turned into a bloody scramble to find a hospital for several owners of IKEA’s line of MYSINGSÖ Beach Chairs. The seats, made from fabric and wood, can allegedly collapse without warning, “posing fall and finger entrapment hazards to consumers.” Accidents involving a collapsed chair have been reported in the USA, Denmark, Germany, Australia, and Finland, leading to the recall of 33,400 MYSINGSÖ Beach Chairs.

IKEA announced the recall in the United States over the weekend. The potentially hazardous chairs were sold between February 2013 and December 2016. The Swedish furniture manufacturer released reports of 13 chairs collapsing worldwide, “including 10 injuries, 6 of which resulted in fingertip amputations.” Of the the 13 alleged incidents, three occurred in the U.S., one leading to a severed fingertip.

“After washing the fabric seat it is possible to reassemble the chair incorrectly leading to risks of falls or finger entrapment,” an IKEA spokesperson wrote in a statement.

Ikea Dresser Recalls

The beach chair recall comes less than two months after IKEA settled a $50-million-dollar lawsuit with three parents who lost their children to a tipped over dresser made by IKEA. The deaths were all connected to IKEA’s 2016 recall of more than 35 million dressers in North America. The dressers, sold from January 2002 to June 2016, made international headlines when nearly 40 injuries were reported, including at least six deaths around the globe. IKEA also recalled about 80,000 safety gates last summer, which sold from August 1995 to June 2016, after learning of more than 50 accidents involving children who sustained concussions, lacerations, and bruising.

Owners of a recalled MYSINGSÖ Beach Chair, which sold for around $25, are being told to stop using the product immediately. In a statement, IKEA said that the company has redesigned the chair to “mitigate the risks of incorrect re-assembly and injuries.” IKEA also stated that all recalled MYSINGSÖ Beach Chairs purchased before February 2017 can be returned to any IKEA store for a safe replacement or a full refund, no receipt necessary.
