Over the past few months, many popular household products have been recalled due to hazards that can cause injuries and pose dangers to consumers. In May, the CPSC announced recalls of three space heaters, including the massive recall of approximately 355,000 Optimus Portable Infrared Radiant Quartz Electric Space Heaters. The heater can pose a fire hazard if the heater comes into contact with nearby combustible materials.

This week, another common household product is being recalled due to an injury hazard. Kichler Lighting is recalling approximately 48,900 Aztec Light Chandeliers that were sold exclusively at Lowe’s stores and online at www.lowes.com between July 2006 and August 2011 for about $240. According to the CPSC, “[t]he chandelier’s fixture loop that connects the hanging chain to the lamp can fail during use causing the chandelier to fall from the ceiling and injure bystanders.”

Consumers should immediately identify whether or not the recall affects their chandelier, as the company has already received six reports of the chandeliers falling from the ceiling, resulting in about $6,000 in property damage. The recalled chandeliers, which were manufactured in China, were sold at Lowe’s stores under the PORTFOLIO brand name and are about 31 inches by 31 inches in size. They feature etched amber glass shades, a faux marble ball in the center, and an olde bronze finish. Consumers can check the sticker located at the top of the chandelier for model number 34330 and the “Aztec” name.

Owners of the recalled Aztec Light Chandeliers should prevent individuals from walking underneath the chandelier in order to avoid a possible injury should the chandelier fall. Kichler will provide a free repair kit to consumers, or they will offer a replacement for chandeliers that have already failed. Consumers can contact Kichler at (800) 554-6504 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or online at www.kichler.com by clicking on the “AZTEC” link in the bottom right corner of the home page.
