Trek Bicycles & Wheel Sets Recalled After a Rider’s Back is Broken
Less than three months after recalling thousands of “Fat Bikes” because the front wheel could come flying off, similar concerns have led the Trek Bicycle Corporation to announce a new recall of more than 900 high performance bicycles and 300 wheel sets. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Trek has received at least 10 accounts of the bicycle’s front wheel breaking and stopping during operation, including “one reported injury involving a broken vertebra.”
The recall affects Trek’s Bontrager wheel sets and Trek’s line of 720 Disc Bicycles from model years 2015, 2016, and 2017. The $1,500 to $1,900 aluminum framed road bikes were sold at retailers across North America from November 2014 to October 2016. The $80 to $90 wheel sets were sold from March 2015 to November 2016. The problem stems from a high rate of faulty spokes breaking in the front wheel, “causing the bicycle to stop suddenly,” which can result “in a serious accident.”
Trek imported their latest faulty products from China. Last month Trek recalled around 600 Bontrager Flare RT bicycle lights, imported from Taiwan, after learning that they could shut down at random. At the time of the recall no injuries were connected to the lights sold in 2016 for $60 to $240, but seven incidents of the light malfunctioning were reported. The bike maker is not new to recalls; over the last decade Trek has averaged almost two recalls a year.
The CPSC is instructing owners of a recalled Trek bicycle or wheel set to stop using them immediately to avoid calamity. The bikes in question, sold from 49 cm to 61 cm, has “Trek” printed across the frame. The bike maker is offering free replacements to their customers through authorized dealers or directly from the company, including free shipping and installation. In addition, Trek wrote a letter to owners of a recalled 720 to inform them that they will receive a $100 Trek coupon good through the end of 2017.
