More Than 1 Million Mangoes Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns

Food recalls are more common than most people would think, as there are a number of reasons that our favorite snacks, meals and ingredients could trigger one. More often than not, the average consumer won’t even hear about a food product recall, because it’s as simple as removing the affected product from stores and replacing it. On the other hand, food recalls can also become national news, as the recall of more than 1 million Daniella mangoes in the wake of a significant salmonella outbreak has over the past few days.

Confirmed Salmonella Infections Top 100

The recall of the Daniella mangoes in the U.S. is part of an ongoing investigation conducted by both the U.S. and Canada, according to Food Safety News. There have been 21 cases of Salmonella infections tied to the mangoes in Canada.  In addition, there have been 105 cases of illnessreported in 16 states, with 25 hospitalizations.

Which Stores are Affected?

Included in the Splendid Products recall is the major southeastern supermarket chain Food Lion, which operates 1,100 stores in 10 states, and lesser-known regional stores like Harvey’s (73 stores in three states) and Reid’s (11 stores in South Carolina). Since the initial FDA announcement, stores from chains including Savemart, Food 4 Less, Ralph’s, Topco, El Super, Kroger, Aldi, and Whole Foods have been added to the recall, according to Food Safety News and eFoodAlert.

A Deeper Problem?

The mangoes are also found in various fruit cocktail products that are sold nationwide. Recently added to the recall are packaged fruit salad products, including Delish!, Garden Highway, Garden Pure, Trader Joe’s Tropical Fruit Medley, and generic Wal-Mart fruit cup items. Those recent additions are believed to have expired between August 25 and 28.

A detailed list of the Daniella mangoes recall is available here, and additional information is available on the FDA website.
